Nowadays, China’s communication industry is developing rapidly, and fiber optic modules are continuously optimized and upgraded. The emergence of PON high-performance optical modules has gradually replaced traditional low-performance optical fibers and is widely used. PON is divided into GPON and EPON. GPON can be used. Said to be an upgraded version of EPON.
Why want to propose GPON?
GPON has a high Gigabit rate, 92% bandwidth utilization and the ability to support multi-service transparent transmission, while ensuring quality of service and level, providing carrier-class network monitoring and service management.
Compared with bandwidth utilization, cost, multi-service support, and OAM functions, GPON is better than EPON:
1.Bandwidth Utilization: On the one hand, EPON uses 8B/10B encoding, which itself introduces a 20% loss. The transmission rate of 1.25 Gbit/s is actually only 1 Gbit/s before the processing protocol.
2.Cost: In terms of single-bit cost, the cost of GPON is lower than that of EPON.
3.Multi-service support: EPON transmission of traditional TDM services is prone to QoS problems. The unique package form of GPON enables it to support ATM services and IP services, to achieve a true full service.
4.OAM function: EPON only regulates basic functions such as remote fault indication, remote loopback control, and link monitoring, while other advanced OAM functions are independently increased by the manufacturer in the device.GPON OAM functions include bandwidth grant allocation, dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA), link monitoring, protection switching, key exchange, and various alarm functions. From the standard point of view, GPON OAM information is more abundant than EPON.
What are the two transmission modes of GPON:
One is the ATM mode and the other is the GPON package (GEM) mode.In the transmission process, GPON can use ATM mode or GEM mode, or both modes can be used together. Which mode to use, choose when GPON is initialized.Optical fiber has the advantages of low loss and resource saving. Considering many broadband applications in the future, more and more countries use optical fiber as the transmission medium.
